It's not just the Chinese index, it's all stocks.

Look at the American S&P:

It's actually less than where it started in 2001(when your Chinese chart starts). Which means, if you invested after 2001 with a diversified portfolio, you probably have less than what you started.

True S&P is now at levels from 1997 and 2002/2003
And if I discount inflation (say 50% accumulated since 1997) it is 50% down
And before crash 1987 was S&P 330 there was accumulated inflation at least 120% since then so if someone bought S&P before crash and was patiently waiting he has money of about same buying power...who would have this money on 4% C&D would have same as who bought stocks...
